January Meeting

The first meeting of the German-American Society for the year 2010 will be on January 5th, at the Elk’s Lodge. The Lodge is located on Seguin St., across from the Chamber of Commerce/Civic Center.
The meeting room will open at 6:00 PM for visiting and refreshments. The first meeting of the year is reserved for the election of officers. Please make your plans to attending this important meeting.

Wassilfest was a big success, for those of you who attended you know it was a cold night but that just added to the Spirit of the Wassail. I would like to thank the following for coming down, regardless of the weather and helping sell the Pork Chops on a Stick:
Bill & Diane Moltz who purchased and marinated the over 700 pork chops, and worked the booth as well.
Helmut & Sylvia Meyer, Darren & Tammy Kowalski, Karola & Martin LeMieux, Charles & Maria Roberson, Lester & Almut Wetzig, Roland & Frauke Morin, Bill and Camille Mikeska, Ralph & Sylvia Schonholz, Klaus Rockwalsky, David Schoenvogel, Mary Irwin, and Helen Moese who helped set-up, worked the booth and helped with the clean-up.
Again thanks to all of you, members working together, is what makes our Society so successful

Steuben Society
Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit

Members of the New Braunfels German American Society founded the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit of the Steuben Society in January 2008.
This January marks the start of our 3rd year. As with the German American Society it is that time of year to collect dues. Dues are only $20.00 a person. Please see Richard Odorfer or Ron Evans to pay your dues for 2010.
The Steuben Society is a National Organization that promotes German Heritage throughout the United States, where the New Braunfels German American Society promotes the German Heritage within New Braunfels and Texas.
Being a member of both organizations is an important way you can help in promoting the German Heritage on a continuous basis. The Steuben Society is the oldest German American Society in America. If you would like to join
the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit please see Ron Evans or Richard Odorfer.

Bus Trip to Weihnachtsmarkt

For those of you who missed it, sorry, the weather was great and it was a fun time. Hope to see you next year.

Maskenball 2010

Again this year we are going to partner with the Elk’s Lodge for Maskenball. It will be on February 13th so mark your calendars. Again this year the event will start with a German meal. The Elk’s Lodge Kitchen crew will be serving Brats, sauerkraut, potatoes, roll, and iced tea. Cost about $8.00.
Be sure and sign up, reservations must be paid before the end of the February meeting. We will have 2 sign-up sheets at this meeting. One is for the dinner, and the other is for those who would like to help us decorate the Hall.

Election of New Officers

As I have mentioned for the past 4 months, we need volunteers to serve as officers in the German American Society. We have had only 1 person come forward, which will puts us in a very bad position.
I was hoping that by giving advance notice that we would have some individuals come forward,
showing their interest in filling an officer position. This has not been the case. The election is upon us so please see David Schoenvogel between 6:00 – 7:00 if you are interested.

New Braunfels Arts Council

The German American Society is a member of the New Braunfels Arts Council. As members we need a representative to attend their meetings. They have the responsibility to keep the Council informed of our activities. If you are interested please see me at the meeting. Thanks, Ron

Trips to Germany

I am aware of 2 trips scheduled to Germany in 2010. One is to Rothenberg, Munich, Neuschwanstein, Lucerne, Switzerland, and Heidelberg. Departure is June 22.
The other is organized by Herb & Claudia Skoog and goes to Hamburg, Braunfels, and Berlin. Departure is April 29th. For more information see Ron.

Emmie Seele Faust Memorial Library

The Sophienburg is going to remodel this library. For a pledge of $200.00 you will have your name exhibited in the renovated Library.
The German American Society will make a $200.00 contribution but it would also be nice is several of our members also made contributions.

Deutsch Sprachkurs
German Classes

Once again our club is sponsoring German classes for adults. Our classes will be held at the new Gruene Methodist Church on Common Street. Classes will be held for 10 consecutive Thursdays starting on January 7 thru March 11. Starting time will be 7:00 P.M and ending time will be 8:15. Spaßzeit für alle!
(Fun Time For All!)

It's time to start getting your creative juices flowing! Maskenball is less than two months away, so it is time to start thinking about what your costume will be for that fun-filled night.
Mark your calendars for February 13th to celebrate Maskenball at the Elk's Lodge. There will be a dinner at 6:30 for those who are interested, and dancing to the music of Kevin, Robert, and the other Sauerkrauts begins at 7:30.
There will be a sign up sheet at the January meeting for those wanting a meal, and money will be due by the February meeting. Also at the January meeting, there will be a sign up sheet for help in decorating.
Get involved in YOUR German American Society, and participate in these activities. There are some really nice folks who you will enjoy getting to know, so come meet them. See you at the meeting.

Christmas Dinner/Meeting

Unser Verein Christmas dinner was a well attended event with over 140 members and guests!
Frauke Morin, with the help of Edith, Harvey and Maria, decorated the hall.

Gemischter Chor Harmonie provided some beautiful entertainment as well as a fun sing-a-long.

Soon after the final sing-a-long the time came to enjoy the very tasty dinner.

St. Nickolas arrived to check on those who were naughty or nice.

„Wie war denn das kalte Buffet?“
„Sehr gut soweit, nur die Brombeermarmelade hat so furchtbar nach Fisch geschmeckt.“
(“How was the cold Buffet?”
“Very good as I recall, only the blackberry marmalade tasted frightfully like fish”)

(An old lady shows the controller her ticket. “That is a children’s ticket, Madam!” notes the controller.
“Now you can see how long I’ve been waiting for this train!”)
