Böhmertaler Blasmusik

32 members of the Böhmertaler Blasmusik will perform from the 8th to 11th of April in San Antonio at the Saengerfest.  We were asked if we can house the members from April 11 until April the 13 when they will leave for Houston. They also will give us a free Concert, either on Sunday or on Monday, if we can get the Elks Lodge.
It is very important that the members of our Verein, those who possibly can, volunteer to accept members of this group into their home for a couple of nights. At our next meeting, I will have a sign-up sheet ready. We NEED your help with this.

Mark Your Calendars!

On Sunday, April 11th, the Comal Community Band will be giving a concert at the First Protestant Church Activity Hall.  This free concert will begin at 3:00.  Many of the German American Society members were at the band's concert in February for the Music Study Club and had a great time.  The upcoming concert will be new music featuring a variety of styles including marches, show tunes, big band, and paso dobles.  Please come to the concert---you'll be glad you did!

Steuben Society

Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit

The Prince Solms von Braunfels Unit 1845 would like to invite all German-American Society Members to join our Unit of the Steuben Society.  Our Unit continues to grow and we believe we are being successful in promoting German Heritage with the United States.  The last edition of the Steuben News contained an article by one of our own members Richard Odorfer.   It was the 3rd in a series about the Peace Treaty between the Comanche Indians and the German Settlers.   Richard has done a great job of informing other Steuben Society members about the contribution given by the German Settlers in Texas.  Although the Steuben is out of New York they have a great interest in the German Heritage throughout this beautiful Country of ours.  If you would like to become a member please see Richard Odorfer or Ron Evans.

Summer German Camp for Children

As for the past 9 years, our club will again offer a German Language Camp for children ages 6 thru 13.  Our classes will begin on June 7 and go through June 18 and will be held at the Old Solms School on the Heritage grounds.  We will have a morning class for beginners starting at 9:00 and ending at 12:00 and a class for children with prior German class experience beginning at 1:00 and ending at 4:00.  Mary Irwin, who has taught these classes in the past, will again be conducting these classes with an emphasis on music, games, and drama. The children learn the basics of German in a very pleasant atmosphere.  If you have children you would like to sign up or have any questions, call Diane Moltz at 660 0437 or 620 6787.

Spaßzeit für alle!

(Fun Time For All!)

At last month's meeting, the Edelweiss Kinderchor von New Braunfels entertained our members, and what a show they put on!  The children did an excellent job.  Everyone seemed to enjoy their singing, and especially the performance by the youngest member who drew laughter throughout the show.  What a ham!  The Kinderchor always enjoys singing for the German American Society because they are so well received and appreciate your support.

Next month, we will have a very special program for our members. Hans Waskönig from Germany will entertain us. He will play folks songs and songs from Vienna for us and we plan a sing-a-long, also.
Helgard had song sheets printed for everybody and Rennie Guenther was kind in letting us use his amplifier.
Thank you to Diane and Bill Moltz for opening your home for Herrn und Frau Waskönig.

Wine & Saenger Fest

Our next fund raiser is on May 1st, and that is the Wine & Saenger Fest.  We need volunteers to help work in our booth. At the April meeting we will have a sign up sheet so please check your schedule and if possible sign up to help on May 1st. We will be cooking Pork Chops, and Wurst. We will also have Sauerkraut, Strudel, and ice tea.

Mai Fest

(Annual Picnic)

Come one!  Come all!  Let's get ready for our annual picnic.  The German American Society's picnic will be held on Tuesday, May 4th, beginning at 6:00pm.  We will be at our familiar location in Landa Park, Pavilions #4 and #5, close to the dance slab.  The meal is free to all members, but there is a $5.00 charge for any guests you might bring.  As usual, the GAS will be providing the meat, which will be brisket and sausage from Schwab's.  Drinks and utensils will also be provided.  Members are asked to bring side dishes, such as salads, vegetables, and deserts.  Please bring enough to serve 8-10 people.
                   Letter A-K:  deserts
                            L-Z:  salad or vegetable
Help will be needed setting up the tables and the tent that afternoon, so if you are available to lend a hand, please see Barry Irwin at the April meeting or call him at 830-620-0369.
Entertainment will be provided by our old ....but not too old...musical friends, Robert Atwood and Kevin Hatcher. Their music is always terrific and enjoyed by everyone, so make plans now to be there for this fun time.

Reach Out Committee

Chrystal Sears made our members aware of the need to have a committee to reach out to our members who are sick, old and/or lonely.  Since many of our members would be happy to be of service, they need assistance in identifying those who would benefit from a friendly word.  If you know of any of our members that would benefit from a visit, a card and/or a phone call or perhaps run an errand, please call Chrystal at 626 2425 or Sylvia Mayer at 620 9905.  If you would like to help these two ladies in any way, please call.

Upcoming Bus Trip

It seems like a long way ahead of us, but we are planning our next bus trip to Beethoven Gardens for June 18th.  This is always a fun trip with lots of music, refreshments, friends, singing, and good old Texas/German Gemütlichkeit. Both the Beethoven Concert Band and the New Braunfels Village Brass Band will be performing that evening.  Once again the German American Society members will have free admission to the gardens if you ride the bus.  The bus will leave Kohl's parking lot at 5pm and return at 11pm.  The fee is $10 per person.  Beginning at the April meeting, we will have a sign up sheet for anyone interested in riding the bus.  Payment is due when you sign up.  This is a great deal--you don't have to drive in San Antonio traffic, you don't have to worry about getting a parking place, you get dropped off and picked up right at the front gate of Beethoven Gardens, and it really only costs you $5 since the admission fee is dropped for our members.  What a deal!  Join us for an evening of fun.
