February Meeting

The next meeting of the German-American Society for the year 2010 will be on February 2nd, at the Elks Lodge.  The Lodge is located on Seguin St., across from the Chamber of Commerce/Civic Center.
The meeting room will open at 6:00 PM for visiting and refreshments.  The first meeting of the year is reserved for the election of officers; however, since we did not accomplish this task we will attempt to do so at this meeting.  Please make your plans to attending this important meeting.

Steuben Society
Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit

Members of the New Braunfels German American Society founded the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit of the Steuben Society in January 2008.  This January marked the start of our 3rd year.  As with the German American Society it is that time of year to collect dues. Dues are only $20.00 per person.  Please see Richard Odorfer or Ron Evans to pay your 2010 dues.
The Steuben Society is a National Organization that promotes German Heritage throughout the United States, where as the New Braunfels German American Society promotes the German Heritage within New Braunfels and Texas. Being a member of both Organizations is an important way that you can help in promoting German Heritage on a continuous basis. The Steuben Society is the oldest German American Society in America.  If you would like to join the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit please see Ron Evans or Richard Ordorfer.

Maskenball 2010

Again this year we are going to partner with the Elks Lodge for Maskenball. It will be on February 13th, so mark your calendars.
Again, as last year, the event will start with a German Meal. The Elks Lodge Ladies Group will be making Brats, Sauerkraut, German Fried Potatoes, Roll, and Iced Tea. Cost $7.50/$8.50.  (Meal comes with one Bratwurst. If you want two brats then the price is $8.50 a plate.)
The proceeds from the meal will go to send disabled children from New Braunfels to summer camp.  Be sure and get your tickets at the February meeting.  Tickets for the meal should be purchased at the February meeting so we can give a head count to the cooking crew.
For your listening and dancing pleasure we have the return of Robert Atwood & Kevin
Hatcher and their friends. This is the band from last year and everyone really enjoyed their music.  Tickets are $5.00 and will also be available.
We will also have a sign-up sheet for decorating for the Maskenball. We will decorate at 5:00 PM, 13 February.
Since the event is the day before Valentines Day, we have a Sweetheart Special: 2 dinners & 2 admissions to the dance for only $25.00. See Almut or Karola for your tickets.
For all of the Non-Dancers, plan on coming anyway! Enjoy a good German Meal and stay around and listen to the great music.

Election of New Officers

I would like to start off by giving my THANKS to David Schoenvogel. David volunteered to head the Nominating Committee and has done an outstanding job. Everyone David approached had a reason as to why they could not serve as an Officer for the Society; however, David did not give up but continued talking to members until he met his goal.
At the January meeting we elected Almut Wetzig as our new Treasurer. A break was called and David Schoenvogel headed a group of members in discussing candidates for the office of President, and
Vice-President/President Elect. The remaining positions, that of Secretary, of Public Relations & of Publications, being filled by the incumbents. After much discussion David and his group came up with two individuals who agreed to run for the President & Vice-President/President Elect Positions. Also discussed was the feasibility of electing a 2nd Vice President. This person would move to the Vice President/President Elect position at the next election.  This would accomplish two things:
            1. In a situation where the President Elect could not fill the Presidential position, this experienced person would be available.
            2.  This person would have two years to share responsibilities and learn about their responsibilities.
At the February Meeting we will vote on Helmuth Mayer for President, and Chris Baker for Vice-President/President Elect, we will also open nominations for the 2nd Vice President Position.  To help with the numerous activities that the Society is involved in, David’s Group also identified individuals to head the different Committees needed to continue our many activities:

Helgard Suhr-Hollis   Maskenball
Barry Irwin     May Picnic
Bill Moltz    Wein-Saenger Fest
Chris Baker     July 4th Parade
Don Knippa    County Fair Parade
Ron Evans   Wurstfest
Bill Moltz   Wassail Fest
Mary Irwin   Christmas Party

Anyone wanting to volunteer please see a Board Member.

Spaßzeit für alle!

(Fun Time For All!)

Since we had many important issues to discuss at the January meeting, we did not have any special entertainment, but February will be different.
Our own Helgard Suhr-Hollis will be presenting to the group on one of her many travels around the world, this time featuring her trip to China.

As you already know, Helgard can tell a great story, and I'm sure she will have many interesting adventures to share.  Can you imagine Helgard speaking Chinese?  That should be a story in itself!  So plan on staying after the business meeting and share her pictures and experiences.

(Wrap your open chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. They will stay fresh much longer and will not get moldy)

Morgens, sieben Uhr.
In the morning, seven clock. The wife places breakfast in front of her working husband, including the newspaper. They eat breakfast, he reads the newspaper, and nobody says anything. Three hours later he is still sitting at the table reading the newspaper, now and then a nod, and sometimes looking out the window.
The wife says, 'Tell me darling, must you not be at the office today?’
He jumps up, ‘Damn, I thought I was there long ago!

"Bei uns ist letzte Nacht eingebrochen worden!", erzählt der Kollege. "Nein, so was! Hat man den Einbrecher denn erwischt?" - "Oh ja! Der arme Kerl liegt jetzt im Krankenhaus - meine Frau hat gedacht ich sei es!"
"Last night we were broken into," says the colleague.
"No, I never! You caught the thief, then?"
"Oh yes! The poor guy is now in the hospital. My wife thought it was me!"

Blonde joke :-) The latest ....
Two blondes meet, says the One, “You, in 2010 Christmas Eve is on a Friday!”
Replied the Other, “Hopefully it's not the thirteenth!” :-)
