!!!! URGENT MESSAGE !!!

Tuesday, October 20th, 6:00 pm at the Seekatz Opera House there is an important meeting concerning the implementation of a plan for the downtown area of New Braunfels.
As members of the German American Society, I believe it would be beneficial if we have a presence at this meeting to add our input if we have the opportunity!!
I’m sure we all agree that we want to keep our German heritage in the downtown area of New Braunfels!!
I’m looking forward to seeing as many of you as can make it at this meeting!

November Meeting

The next meeting of the German American Society will be October 27th at the Elk’s Lodge, located on Seguin St. across from the Chamber of Commerce/Civic Center.
The meeting room will open at 6:00 PM for Visiting and Refreshments. The meeting will start at 7:00. We have several important items to discuss: Wurstfest, Weihnachtsmarkt, Christmas Dinner/Party, Wassailfest, Maskenball, and Nomination of Society Officers for 2010.
Also we will complete the Wurstfest work schedule and pass out tickets to workers. We have
so much going on for the rest of the year be sure and attend.

Reminder

We have name tags for all members. They work very well if you have a memory like I do. When you come in, look on the table by the door and get your name tag, they are in alphabetical order. They are attached with Velcro for easy removal.
This will help us as we meet new friends. If you do not have a name tag on the table, please tell Tom or Ron so that we can get you one made.
When the meeting is over and you are ready to leave, drop your name tag in the box (it is labeled) by the door, and we will bring the name tags back to the next meeting. In the past we have found that if you take it home you forget it for the next meeting. We will bring the name tags to each meeting.

Steuben Society
Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit

Members of the New Braunfels German American Society founded the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit 1845 of the Steuben Society in January 2008. All members of the Steuben Society are invited to our meeting and all of our activities. The Steuben Society is the oldest German American society in America, and our support helps continue our German Heritage in this country. If you would like to join the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit please see Ron Evans or Richard Ordorfer.

Nomination of New Officers

In the past we would have nomination and voting for officers in December. We changed that to January so we would not mess up our Christmas Dinner/Party. Currently David Schoenvogel has volunteered to Chair the Nominating committee but has had no one else volunteer to help him. Several names have been mentioned that everyone believes would be good candidates.
We have many members who would be excellent officers. Due to the fact that the current President Elect is unable to assume the position as President, I will volunteer to continue as President through March and work with the newly elected President and Vice-President to insure a smooth transition. Also, as past President, I will continue to attend board meetings and work in every way possible to support the new officers. We also need someone to fill the position of Treasurer. Karola has been treasurer several years and would like to step down from that position. As I have stated in previous newsletters I believe it is the best for the Society to have others fill these positions so we can have new ideas.

Skat Tournament

Skat is a German Card game with an International following. In Germany it is common for the men to go and play SKAT every Sunday morning. After they finish, they go home for a family Sunday dinner.
On October 25th at 2:00 pm, in Seguin, at the BIG RED BARN, (Texas Agriculture & Heritage Center) there will be a Skat Tournament. If you would like more information call Jim Leissner (830) 379-2955 or James C. Stolte (830) 606-2855 for more information. If you don’t play Skat but would like to learn, go to the tournament and observe the playing of this International game. There is an International Skat Tournament scheduled for February in New Braunfels, so you can see this is an area where you should learn to play this game.

Bus Trip to Weihnachtsmarkt

Clark Travel has been contracted to take us by bus to Fredericksburg on December 5th, 2009. We will have a sign up list at the October 27th meeting, also at our Wurstfest booth. Members who went on that trip last year enjoyed it so much, and asked that this trip be offered again this year. So please join us, it is $10.00 per person. The companionship and the experience is priceless and a joyful. It is a good opportunity to do some Christmas shopping. Also there are some good places to eat in that town.
The bus will pick up all passengers at 10 am in the Kohl's parking lot. At 5 pm, the bus will load for the trip back to Kohl’s. The trip each way is approximately 2 hours.
If you like to contact me for information and signup, please call: Karola at: 830-899-4453

‘Zivi! My stool is too hard!’
‘Then you should eat more fruit!’

(In the hospital, in the nursery, one baby asks the other: "Are you a boy or a girl?"
"One boy"
"Prove it!"
"If the nurse is gone, then I'll show you."
The nurse leaves, the boy throws the blanket back and says:
"You see? .. Blue socks!")

(On the first day of school with a new class, the teacher would like to get to know her students and let each introduce themselves.
"My name is Natalie, I am 11 years old and my father is a mailman."
"My name is Alan, I'm 10 and a half year old and my father is a mechanic"
"My name is Gianpierro, I am 11 years old and my father is exotic dancer in a gay bar."
Completely upset the teacher changes the subject. During the intermission, she calls Gianpierro to her and asks him if the story was true with his father.
Gianpierro turns red and stammers: "No, my father plays in the Italian national football team, but I was too
embarrassed to say that.")

(Two friends talk about their girlfriends.

One says: "In the morning I can not eat because I love her. At noon, I can nothing to eat, because I love her. In the evening I can not eat, because I love her. And at night I can not sleep because ... "
"... You love her," interrupted the other.
"No, it’s because I'm hungry!")
