Secret Meeting
On September 1st we will have a SECRET Meeting at the Elk’s Lodge. Do not tell anyone about this meeting unless they are people who want to meet other people and enjoy an evening of fun and entertainment. We do not want any old FUDDY DUDDYS coming and attempting to spoil our fun.
Tell only fun loving people to come to the Elk’s Lodge, located on Seguin St. across from the Chamber of Commerce/Civic Center.
The meeting room will open at 6:00 PM for Visiting and Refreshments (not necessarily in that order). The meeting will start at 7:00 (if everyone has had an opportunity to visit the bar.)
I was away on vacation last month and I missed everyone, so all fun loving members and guests come and have a great time.
This meeting starts our countdown to the Comal County Parade and to the Wurstfest. We have so much going on for the rest of the year that YOU will not want to miss a thing.
Steuben Society
Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit
Members of the New Braunfels German American Society founded the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit of the Steuben Society in January 2008. All members of The Steuben Society are invited to our meetings and all of our activities.
The Steuben Society is the oldest German-American society in America, and our support helps continue our German Heritage in this country. If you would like to join the Prince Solms Von Braunfels Unit please see Ron Evans or Richard Ordorfer.
Bus Trip to October Fest
at Beethoven in San Antonio
IT IS A DONE DEAL. We currently have 44 people signed up so we have room for 8 more. We will have the sign-up sheet at the meeting. We still have the October Meeting before we go; however, if you signed up and miss the October meeting we will leave from in front of the former Luby building, in front of Kohl’s at 5:00 pm on October 10th. The cost is $10.00 a person. We expect great food and music, so if you haven’t signed up, sign-up before the bus is full. We will collect money at this meeting and the October Meeting, all of those signed up must pay by the October meeting.
Special Message
In the past we would have nomination and voting for officers in December. We changed that to January so we would not mess up our Christmas Dinner/Party. However, when we get to January, a member of the Society would make a motion to keep all officers in their present position for another year. This has gone on for 3 years with little or no change to the officers. According to the by-laws, the President would be replaced by the Vice-President (President Elect), this would allow new ideas to surface and allow involvement from several members of the Society in a leadership role. We have had 15 Presidents in the past 30 years, and 20 Vice-presidents. This shows the ability of many to fill these positions. While the positions of Secretary and Treasurer are held for a longer period of time they also change to allow others to work as officers of the German American Society. In talking to the other officers, some would also like to have someone else fill their position.
Currently Diane Moltz, Mary Irwin, and Tom Sears have volunteered to stay in their positions. They feel that this would help maintain continuity if no one else is nominated. However, under current by-laws I would be replaced by the Vice President (Aloisia Chinchilla). Aloisia, due to family concerns, has stated that she will not assume the President Position, nor does she want to remain as Vice-President. Karola LeMieux has also requested that she be replaced as Treasurer, since she has been in that position for the past 6 years. This means we are looking for 3 nominations: President, Vice-President (President Elect), and Treasurer. Karola, Aloisia and I will work with whoever is elected to our positions in every way possible to insure the success of the German American Society. I personally plan on being involved as much as needed, but I feel that we must continue to have new leaders for the betterment of the Society. David Schoenvogel has volunteered to chair the committee so please see David after the meeting if you are interested.

Note from Aloisia
County Fair Parade
Once again we are participating in the County Fair Parade. Rudy Seidel has offered the use of his trailer which will be decorated by the German American Society. Lou Streitenberger and Don Knippa have agreed to be the Chair Persons for the parade. If you can help with decorating the float, or if you would like to walk/ride the parade route (in German attire), please contact the Chair Persons or any of the board members if you would like to participate in the parade.
The Float Committee will have a short meeting after our regular meeting to discuss transportation. The parade route is a long one.
The citizens of New Braunfels appreciate our participation. We always are welcomed and people always thank us for helping keep the German Heritage alive in New Braunfels. Please come and help support the German American Society in our efforts to show New Braunfels that this is still a German town!

It was not only interesting to listen to the telling of the story of the Berlin Wall, but the humor that he interjected made it very entertaining as well. The members of our group seemed to really enjoy hearing this tale as many of them had been directly involved in the activities in Germany themselves, and were able to interject personal anecdotes to the presentation. Excellent success for all! Thank you, Chris Baker, for telling us about this wonderful speaker.
At the September meeting, we will have another presenter who was suggested by Chris. Rosa Radom Williams, who currently lives in San Antonio, will be speaking to us at our next gathering. Ms. Williams is a Holocaust survivor. I am sure her story will be very interesting, and one you won't want to miss. See you at the Elks Lodge.

Ein ideales Mittel gagen Blattläuse ist ein Lauge aus 2.5 Liter Wasser, 50 Gramm Schmierseife und 50 ml Spiritus. Die befallenen Stellen sollten damit mehrmals besprüht werden.
(An ideal mixture against aphids is made of 10.5 cups of water, 1.8.oz of soft soap and 1.7 oz of alcohol. The infested leaves should be sprayed several times.)

Rezept
Avocado-Tomaten Salat
Zutaten:
Sonnenblumenöl 2 EL (2 Tablespoons)
Reisessig 1 EL
Orangensaft 3 EL
Ingwer 10 g (1 gm = 0.04 ounce)
Knoblauchzehe 1
Pfeffer, Salz
Koriander, frisch 1 EL
Aprikosen, getrocknet 50 g
Tomaten 6
Avocado 1
3 Portionen - 324 Kcal pro Portion
* - 10 min Zub. - 30 min Ges.
Zubereitung:
Avocado-Tomaten-Salat aus Thailand sollte ca. 30 Minuten ziehen, damit die Aprikosen genügend quellen können, die der scharfen Marinade etwas Süße verleihen. Für die Marinade Sonnenblumenöl mit Reisessig und frisch gepreßtem Orangensaft verrühren. Frischen Ingwer schälen, in möglichst kleine Würfel schneiden und zur Marinade geben. Knoblauchzehe pellen, durch die Knoblauchpresse drücken und in die Marinade geben. Mit frisch gemahlenem Pfeffer, Salz und feingeschnittenem Koriander würzen. Möglichst ungeschwefelte getrocknete Aprikosen, die, wie auf dem Bild oben, braun aussehen, in kleine Würfel schneiden und in die Marinade geben. Tomaten achteln und in eine Salatschüssel geben. Eine reife Avocado mit einem scharfen Messer längs halbieren und vom Kern abdrehen. Schale abziehen und Avocado vierteln. Die Viertel quer in etwas dickere Scheiben schneiden und mit den Tomaten mischen. Avocado-Tomaten-Salat mit der Marinade übergießen, vorsichtig durchmischen und gut ziehen lassen.
Preparation:
The Thai avocado-tomato salad should take approximately 30 minutes such that the dried apricot pieces can soften and sweeten the sharp dressing sufficiently.
Mix the sunflower oil with the rice vinegar and the freshly squeezed orange juice for the dressing.
Peel the fresh ginger, cut into small as possible cubes and add to the dressing.
Peel the garlic clove and, using a garlic press, add to the dressing along with freshly ground black pepper, salt and finely cut coriander (cilantro).
Cut tomatoes into eighths and put into salad dish.
With a sharp knife, cut a ripe avocado in half lengthwise and remove seed. Remove skin and cur each half in half. Cut the quarters, crosswise, into four pieces and add to the tomato mix.
Pour the dressing over the avocado/tomato mixture and carefully mix well.
